Local Church Expands for Education
by Katie Cooley
Mount Calvary Lutheran Church has been a part of Holdrege since 5 men voted for the church to be formed in 1937. In 1962 the church rung in its 25th anniversary in the current location East of Holdrege Middle School. Since then, the church and it’s congregation have grown and expanded in many different directions. This growth has allowed for a remodel and expansion of the old church structure.
The new wing of the church is devoted to education. This new wing includes four Sunday school classrooms complete with special touches like a puppet stage for young sunday school goers. These rooms can also double as a bridal suite on wedding days or other events. Included in this wing is a brand new nursery, a resource the church did not have a specific space for before the remodel. As younger couples and their newborns begin to fold into the congregation, the nursery will become a great asset to Mount Calvary.
In addition to the new education wing, the office spaces were remodeled as well. Once separated on opposite ends of the hallway, the church staff offices are now neatly lined up for better access between offices. The high school ministry area got a spruce up as well. This space, furnished with couches, tables, and a kitchenette, will also double as a space to feed the family on wedding days or for a small reception after funerals.
The expansion happens in addition to the many ways Mount Calvary has been serving the community for years. The Christian Charity Fund, funded by Phelps County Ministerial Association, provides financial support for families in need. The Caring Cupboard helps provide food pantry items as well as paper goods and other necessary items that are not covered by food stamps. Both these services are open from 10-noon on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Additionally, Mount Calvary has a thriving youth ministry, a program that serves individuals in Phelps County Prison, takes students to Camp Luther in the summer, and rents out the Fellowship Hall for community use.
The official ribbon cutting for the community will be on Friday, January 10 at 9:30 am. Services are held on Sundays at 8:30 and at 10:30 and on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30.
