Dan Christensen Featured in July Pop-Up Art Gallery

HOLDREGE – The photography of longtime Holdrege resident Dan Christensen will be featured in the Iron Horse Arts District’s July pop-up art gallery at the Nebraska Prairie Museum.

The public is invited to a reception from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, at the museum, 2701 Burlington St., in Holdrege. Christensen’s photography will remain on display at the museum throughout July.

Christensen, who passed away in 2024, spent more than 38 years behind the camera as owner and operator of Christensen Photography. Throughout his career, he photographed countless area weddings, senior portraits and family milestones.

Known for his humor, quick wit and ability to put people at ease, Christensen had an extraordinary gift for capturing genuine moments. He never met anyone he couldn’t nickname, and his warm personality made every photography session memorable.

Following his retirement from photography, Christensen served as executive director of the Nebraska Prairie Museum, where he served for five years.

While many remember Christensen for his portrait photography, this exhibit showcases another side of his artistic talent. A humble artist, Christensen rarely spoke about his fine art photography. Instead, he simply said he took the time to look closely and notice what others were often too busy to see.

He found beauty everywhere: the reflection of a raindrop on a leaf, the vibrant colors of nature, the sweeping panorama of a harvest field or sunset, and the textures and shapes of everyday objects. Whether capturing the graceful curve of an antique oil can or the intricate design found in the natural world, Christensen’s photographs reveal an artist who saw wonder in both the extraordinary and the ordinary.

The Iron Horse Arts District’s Pop-Up Gallery program highlights the work of regional artists and provides opportunities for residents and visitors to experience local art in unique community spaces.

The July exhibit is free and open to the public during regular museum hours.

For more information about the exhibit or the Iron Horse Arts District, visit the Iron Horse Arts District website at www.ironhorsedistrict.org.

In addition to Dan’s pop-up gallery at the museum, the arts district is also featuring the art of Christy Kosmicki through July 6 at its new gallery at 401 East Ave., in Holdrege. Starting July 9, patriotic art from area artists will be featured.

The gallery is open Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and Thursdays from 12:30-5:30 p.m. or by appointment by emailing admin@ironhorsedistrict.org.
