Holdrege Area Public Library Awarded $25,000 Literacy Bridges Grant to Expand Adult Literacy and Digital Skills Programming

HOLDREGE, Neb. — The Holdrege Area Public Library has been selected as a recipient of a $25,000 grant through the 2026 Literacy Bridges: Empowering 21st Century Communities Grant Program, a national initiative supporting adult basic and digital literacy efforts in rural and small communities.

This project is made possible by a grant from the Association for Rural & Small Libraries through the generosity of Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The Literacy Bridges initiative is a competitive, invitation-only opportunity available exclusively to Carnegie-built libraries serving rural and/or small communities across the United States. Libraries were selected for invitation based on population size and rural service area criteria, recognizing the important role small and rural libraries play in supporting lifelong learning and community development.

The grant program is designed to help libraries strengthen adult literacy services by providing funding for new or expanded programming, technology resources, professional development, and community-centered literacy initiatives. Library staff will also take part in an educational cohort focused on program design, community partnerships, digital literacy, and sustainability.

The Holdrege Area Public Library plans to use the funding to expand Adult Basic and Digital Literacy programming for community members of all ages and experience levels. Planned efforts include increasing access to technology, creating structured digital literacy learning opportunities, and developing programming that supports older adults, English language learners, and individuals seeking to strengthen everyday technology skills. The library plans to build upon existing and new partnerships with local organizations to help shape and strengthen programming.

“Our library recognizes the growing need for accessible adult literacy and digital literacy opportunities within our community,” said Sierra Burrows, Library Director of the Holdrege Area Public Library. “This grant will allow us to expand educational programming by bringing in guest speakers, offering hands-on classes, and creating structured learning opportunities that help community members build confidence and essential skills in an encouraging environment. We are excited for the opportunity to strengthen partnerships and provide programs that respond directly to community needs.”

The Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) builds strong communities through professional development and elevating the impact of rural and small libraries. ARSL recognizes the uniqueness of small and rural libraries and is committed to providing an environment that encourages excellence within this community of practice, supporting their goals of service and speaking on behalf of this important constituency.
