Meet the Artist: Mona “Mosie” Peterson’s Pop-Up Art Gallery Opens July 10

HOLDREGE, Neb. — The Iron Horse Arts District is proud to present its July Pop-Up Art Gallery, featuring the expressive and heartfelt watercolor work of local artist and beloved art educator Mona Peterson, also known by her artist name (and grandma name), “Mosie.” The exhibit opens at Lost Way Brewery on July 10, with an opening reception from 5–7 p.m. where guests can meet the artist and enjoy refreshments provided by Family Fare.

Peterson has taught elementary art in schools across the area for over 45 years, sharing her passion for creativity with generations of students. She has also been painting in watercolor for nearly as long, cultivating a unique artistic voice that blends abstract and realistic techniques to capture the essence of childhood.

“Although I’ve painted many different subjects, my favorite has always been kids, kids, kids,” said Peterson. “I strive to create universal statements through portraiture—capturing moments, feelings, and emotions of a time and place. My intention is to produce a work of art that stands on its own—not just because it is of somebody.”

Her paintings focus less on exact likeness and more on evoking a shared emotional experience, making each piece both personal and universally resonant.

The Pop-Up Art Gallery series is one of the Iron Horse Arts District’s many efforts to uplift regional artists, activate community spaces, and increase access to the arts in everyday life. All are invited to this welcoming, come-as-you-are event to experience Mosie’s art and meet the artist herself.
